skincare regimen: acne prone skin

A sample of some skincare products that may work well for those with adult onset acne. As always, we recommend consulting a dermatologist.

In many ways having adult onset acne is worse than having acne as a teenager but with the right care it can be manageable. Ironically the changes you will need to make will also improve your overall health and well-being. While you may need the help of prescription medications there are lifestyle changes you can make to aid is correcting the imbalance in your body.

You are what you eat!

    - Dark Leafy Greens! Green smoothies, wheat grass shots, and green XXX while on trend are not the best way to take advantage of the skin healthy properties packed into these hearty vegetables. Kale, spinach, mustard greens, and the like all contain bioflavonoids like quercetin; a powerful anti-inflammatory. They are rich in dietary fiber, folic acid, vitamin C (less so in swiss chard and spinach), potassium, magnesium, vitamin K, and various phytochemicals. These nutrients are skin healthy, hair healthy, and heart healthy!

Get up and move!

    - It may sound counter-intuitive but regular exercise can do wonders for your skin and hair. It is possible that your skin could react negatively to the sweat and hair products that run onto you face during a workout but it is that same workout that helps your body perform to the best of its ability to filter out harmful toxins that impede clear skin and hair growth. Taking a few precautions can limit the potential negative effects of sweat on your skin.

Always wear a head band to keep your hair away from your face and have a barrier between your hairline and your face. Immediately after your workout remove the sweat soaked headband, wash your face with your favorite cleanser and warm water. Then rinse with cold water to close your pores. If you do not shower at the gym then put on a clean headband, scarf, or wrap a towel around your head to prevent any other impurities from running into your face.
