Toner Basics & 7 Skin Method
We often suggest skincare routines for various skin types or seasons but sometimes we neglect to tell you why or if you NEED all of those products or steps in your routine. The answer is YES ABSOLUTELY! One step we always get questions about is toner. By the time you get to the end of this post you will be an EXPERT!
Why do you need toner?
Well that depends on who you ask! OK, no seriously, toners are water-based liquids or varying consistency that can be used as the last step of the cleansing process to get off stubborn dust, make-up, or excess oil AND rehydrate your skin returning it to a normal pH level.
Even when you avoid cleansers with harsh alcohols the cleansing step can strip your skin of its natural moisture and oils. Especially if you double cleanse like we do! Sometimes after double cleansing we even use a cleansing water to finish the cleansing process and then follow up with more traditional toners
Using our cheat sheet will take the guess work and frustration out of the toner selection process.
There are two families of toners: moisturizing and exfoliating
MAKE YOUR CHOICE!
CONGRATULATIONS! You now have an arsenal of toners at your disposal. Well, you do if you purchase skincare en masse like we do
Now what do you do?
There are two effective ways to apply toner: with a cotton pad and with your hands. You can use either method with the more moisturizing toners but we advise pouring exfoliating toners on to a cotton round.
How much do you apply?
Normally we would say “too much of a good thing can be bad” BUT then came the “7 – Skin Method”. The what?!?
In Korean the words for toner and skin are one in the same. About a year ago someone, probably to sell more product, came up with the “7 – Skin Method”. Basically, apply 7 layers of a moisturizing toner, allowing no more than 3 minutes between each application, for the toner to fully absorb into the skin.
Now we thought, “that’s just doing too much”! To our astonishment instead of making the skin feel heavy, it felt incredibly plump and supple. This feeling lasted several hours. After the first week there is a noticeable difference in skin texture.
Is this necessary? NOPE!
Is it indulgent? OH YEAH!
