Back to Basics: The 5 Year Itch

When we decided to embrace our natural texture and stop using chemical straighteners, we knew it would be a challenging journey of self-discovery. During the past 15yrs many women with curly/coily/kinky hair have embarked on a similar journey; so much so that it has began redefining the haircare industry. Now there is significant demand not only for products catered to textured hair but for naturally derived products. Women worldwide are not only eliminating the chemical straighteners but chemical products more generally.

After LOTS of trial and error you get to a point where you think “I’ve got this” and or you just “know” how to respond to your hair’s unique needs. We have also noticed that it is at this point, roughly 5yrs into the natural hair journey, that women start to get the itch to do something different. This impulse arises from 3 sources: boredom, changes in your hair texture, and or your hair has reached an awkward length.

Let's first tackle BOREDOM!

At this point you have done every, twist-out, braid-out, rod set, blow out, wash and go, braids, and weave possible. Or at least you feel you have.

This is a critical time because it is easy to become complacent and start to slack on all the things that made it so that you were able to have the gorgeous healthy head of hair you have now. This is the point when you need to revisit all those techniques you used in the beginning to ensure healthy hair:

  • Do you still pre-poo before every wash?
  • Are you deep conditioning at least once a week?
  • Are you co-washing regularly and avoiding sulfate based shampoos?
  • Do you still try to limit the use of heat?

If you answered NO to any or all of these, then before you do anything new, it’s time to go back to the basics and make sure your hair is in its strongest state before making drastic changes to your routine/style.

You might find that true source of your frustration had to do with changes to your hair brought about by “slipping on the basics”!

Now if you still find that you are bored with your style, start to think outside the box! Natural hair is incredibly versatile and with the right care you can do just about anything. Bored with the color, then try a natural dye like henna. It is a great protein treatment while giving your hair a beautiful red/burgundy hue.

Maybe you just really prefer short hair. While you are proud of how much you have been able to grow out healthy hair, there is no shame in wanting to CHOP IT OFF. We know that sometimes women who do this get a lot of appalled reactions or commentary like: why would you cut off all that length? Did you have damaged hair? We say be whomever you want to be and ignore the naysayers!
