From our founders: Summer Favorites 2018 Part 2

Rather than the usual summer favorites post we thought we would get our founders to each post their personal product favorites. They have different skin and haircare needs, as well as different preferences when it comes to makeup. It also gives them a chance to talk about whatever they want. Here’s Fawziyya’s take on her faves!

Hi! I am so excited to share my summer favorites with you! Summer for me is all about minimalism. I select a capsule wardrobe, find multi-use products and go for the most low maintenance hairstyles possible.

If you are looking for simple, then you’ve come to the right place. Check out below where I spill all of my secrets to effortless summer looks. Let me know how you keep it simple while still looking cool all summer long.

While some may be transitioning full on to Fall, I’m still holding on to every bit of summer that is left! I love hot weather and even the humidity that comes with it. I am convinced that humidity is the secret sauce to the best skin and hair, but that’s just me. This summer I kept things pretty simple in terms of my beauty routine, minimizing the amount of time I spent on glamorizing. That said, I did have some staples that got me through the summer and that I will definitely continue to use as the weather cools down.

back to basics

I tend to start my beauty routine with foods, since I see a significant difference in my skin and hair when I have a healthier diet. These are the foods that I swear by in the summer.

  1. Watermelon

  2. Lemon

  3. Apple Cider Vinegar

  4. Mango

  5. Avocado

  6. Matcha

  7. Coconut everything!

In terms of skincare, I look for the same ingredients I’m eating in my products and anything that is multipurpose. It’s an amazing way to keep things simple, while also giving your body what it needs. For instance, you can use coconut oil in your hair, to moisturize your skin and to shave.

DON’T SKIMP ON THE SUN PROTECTION

Whether I am wearing makeup or not, sunscreen is an absolute must. I tried a few different ones this summer but I am still looking for the love of my life. Until then, here are the ones I have up next for me to try this fall!

My hair was in protective styles all summer. This basically means I either braided, twisted, pinned, crocheted and everything else in between. This made daily maintenance minimal, which helped to reduce breakage and give my hair and me a break! We say it all the time, but the most important thing to do when you are wearing protective styles is to prep and take care of your hair underneath. This calls for products with clever applicators and some easy, DIY oils.

Since discovering Girl and Hair at the Project Beauty Expo, it is my go-to shampoo and rinse. It is perfect for all hair types and the most refreshing shampoo I have ever used.

DIY might be a stretch in terms of my oil, because I don’t have time for that. I pick my favorite oils and mix them together to apply to my hair, paying particular attention to the ends, as needed. I’ve been using Kreyol Essence Castor Oil and layering in additional oils based on what my hair needs. This is typically a combination of Avocado oil and vegetable glycerin. I love the addition of vegetable glycerin because it is a humectant and helps to pull in moisture.

Lastly, before putting my hair in a protective style, I always use a heavier cream to keep my hair nourished while it is on vacation. My current favorite is Creme Brulee for Kinks Curls and Coils Curling and Twisting Cream from the brazilian-inspired brand Beija Flor Naturals. The scent is amazing and the ingredients make it even better. It is loaded with Shea Butter, Coconut Oil, and Aloe Vera offering the perfect balance of moisture, smoothing and slip.

the subtle glowup

Makeup is not usually as big for me in the summer because of the heat. When I do choose to wear makeup the most important steps for me are the primers and creme highlighters. I like a pore minimizing, mattifying primer on any part of my face that is causing trouble. I then layer a luminizing primer on the same points of my face where I would put highlighter. Some days this is it, other days or nights, I might go for a bit more. I will use a lightweight foundation or just blot with a finishing powder or luminizing powder and add a creme highlight to my cheeks, , nose, temples and eyelids. My go to products this summer were the ultimate high-low combination. I used the Hylamide Finisher HA Blur from Deciem, which is a mattifying, blurring primer with hylauronic acid and the Rituel de Fille Light Creme Luminizers.

what will you carry with you

I have really enjoyed having a pared down routine for summer, and I am starting to question why I don’t do this year-round. That said, while I do find a need for heavier weight moisturizers as it gets colder, I am definitely carrying some of my summer favorites into the Fall/Winter season. Let me know what you loved this summer and which products you plan to carry with you into the cooler months ahead!
