Letter from the Editors: What is Beauty?

Growing up, we often heard the phrase, “beauty is only skin deep.” It was always intended to remind us that we are much more than what others can see. This month we dive into what impacts people’s perceptions of their own beauty and the beauty behind who people are.

In the first part of the year, several brands received backlash due to their promotion of skin bleaching products in Africa. While they may have been in the headlines, skin bleaching as a practice is widely popular throughout both Africa and Asia. Check out our blog Cutting to the Chase on Skin Bleaching for more on what drives people to use these products.

Who are these beauty customers with evolving values and what is important to them?

As retail in total continues to shift, consumers are more and more interested in experiences and products that align with who they are. Beauty in particular continues to see trends in eco-friendly and natural beauty products. Who are these beauty customers with evolving values and what is important to them? We asked 10 women three questions to understand what means the most to them. Are they your customers? Are they just like you?

What we learned is that they all value self-care, but it looks different for each of them. They all care deeply about helping others and want to leave behind a better planet for anyone who comes behind them. Don’t just take our word for it though, check out their responses in our Women Making Bold Moves Feature.
